Other Laws & Issues
Holidays
If you plan on going abroad you should be aware that even places renowned for clubbing like Ibiza have drug laws, which are upheld by the local police. Being caught in possession can cause all kinds of problems and ruin your trip. Being caught with larger amounts can lead to even more trouble, including long prison sentences. Try and find out the penalties for committing drug offences, and act accordingly!
Drug Driving
Under the Road Traffic Act (1972) it is an offence to drive whilst "unfit through drink or drugs". This includes drugs like solvents, illegal drugs and even medicines that can make you drowsy. You could be disqualified from driving, fined or in serious cases sent to prison.
Medicines Act (1968)
Other drugs including Ketamine and GHB are controlled under the Medicines Act. These drugs are illegal to produce or supply without a licence. Possession is not an offence.
Customs and Excise Management Act (1979)
The Customs and Excise Act penalises unauthorised import or export of controlled drugs. The maximum penalties are the same as for other trafficking offences except that in a magistrates court fines can reach up to three times the value of the drugs seized.
Drug Traffickers Offences Act (1994)
It is an offence to sell articles for the preparation or administration of controlled drugs such as cocaine snorting kits. The Act also allows for the seizure of assets and income of someone who is found guilty of drug trafficking, even if the assets and income cannot be shown to have come from the proceeds of drug trafficking.
